Chassahowitzka River Campground Closure
CURRENT ISSUES:
The Southwest Florida Water Management District (SWFWMD) has announced the closure of the Chassahowitzka River Campground, citing hurricane damage, safety concerns, and high repair costs. The 40-acre property, part of a larger conservation tract, is now being considered as surplus land, meaning it could be sold off in the future. Officials argue the campground has not served conservation purposes, making its upkeep an ineffective use of taxpayer dollars. Keep in mind, the WMD making these statements before completing a full evaluation is concerning and echoes similar patterns of communication we’ve seen in past attempts to open conservation land to development.
WHY IS THIS BAD?
Loss of Public Access – Selling the land could limit recreational opportunities like camping, kayaking, and wildlife viewing that locals and visitors have enjoyed for years.
Risk of Development – If sold to private buyers, the land may be developed in ways that harm the river, springs, and surrounding habitat.
Loss of Affordable Outdoor Recreation – Public campgrounds offer budget-friendly access to nature, and selling the land could replace that with private options that are more expensive and less accessible for families.
TAKE ACTION:
The FINAL (we hope) meeting for the SWFWMD to vote on the Chassahowitzka River Campground agreement is on Tuesday, September 23, 2025 – 3:00 pm at 7601 US Hwy 301 North Tampa, FL 33637
Public comment is expected so please attend and support voting in favor of the Management Agreement between the Citrus BOCC and SWFWMD to keep the Chassahowitzka River Campground open!
